Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit would like to remind citizens to be cautious when purchasing items through online ads following incidents of airline ticket frauds.
Officers began an investigation on June 12, 2017, after a victim came forward to report a fraud. The victim advised that she purchased airline tickets for overseas flights from an ad on an online classified website. The tickets appeared to be legitimate, however, when the victim attempted to use them for the flight, they were not accepted. The investigation revealed that the tickets had been originally purchased using a stolen credit card.
Investigators have received other similar reports and want to remind citizens to shop safely online. Do not make purchases from companies or individuals you do not trust. If a situation feels suspicious, trust your instincts. Do not be talked into using payment methods with which you are uncomfortable and do not pay by sending cash, money transfers or money orders.
