April 21, 2021 – Durham police have arrested and charged a man after they say a victim was bilked out of $340,000 in an online romance scheme.

In February, police say the victim was contacted by the suspect posing as a member of the military, hoping to retire in Canada. The victim allegedly began sending him money to help.  On Thursday, investigators from DRPS financial crimes unit started a fraud investigation in collaboration with Canada Post postal inspectors. As a result, the suspect was arrested and police seized his computers, cash and other fraudulent documents at an address on Elton Way in Whitby.

Ituah Ogun, 33, of Elton Way in Whitby, was charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by Crime, and possession of counterfeit mark. He was released on a promise to appear before a court at a later date. Toronto Star reports. | READ MORE
