Belhassen Trabelsi, one of the richest and most powerful members of the former Tunisian regime who’s been fighting extradition from Canada, has disappeared off the radar of Canadian authorities. After years of fighting his extradition, the brother-in-law of former Tunisian dictator Zine el Abidine Ben Ali was supposed to be put on a plane and sent back to Tunisia by the Canada Border Services Agency on Tuesday. But documents from a Federal Court decision last week show that Trabelsi has disappeared. The disappearance puts into question Canada’s efforts to extradite a man accused of stealing possibly billions of dollars from the Tunisian people.
