Toronto lawyer couple charged with fraud in real estate transactions

Toronto police have charged a husband-and-wife lawyer team in connection with alleged fraud in multiple real estate transactions. Investigators allege the misconduct occurred over several years and involved clients’ funds.

A Toronto husband-and-wife lawyer team has been arrested and charged in connection with alleged fraud tied to real estate transactions, according to Toronto police.

Investigators allege the misconduct occurred between 2021 and 2024 and involved numerous real estate transactions, including matters affecting clients of the firm. Police say the alleged scheme resulted in the misappropriation of client funds over an extended period.

Singa Bui has been charged with fraud over $5,000, criminal breach of trust, and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. Her husband, Nicholas Cartel, has also been charged with fraud over $5,000. The charges have not been proven in court.

The Law Society of Ontario previously issued interim suspensions against both lawyers after receiving complaints from clients reporting missing money connected to real estate transactions. The suspensions were imposed while regulatory and criminal investigations were ongoing.

As part of the police investigation, authorities seized hundreds of high-end designer items from the couple’s residence, which police allege were purchased using proceeds linked to the alleged fraud. The investigation remains active.

Both accused are scheduled to appear in court in August 2025.
