Scam artists dupe $70,000 out of Cobourg last year

Members of Cobourg, Ont. police investigated 82 reported scams in 2016, resulting in a total of $69,932 lost. The majority of the scams were wire fraud and phishing scams, followed by CRA scams.

Ransomware enables an offender to either lock files until a victim pays money, or threatens to release their files publicly unless payment is provided.

“Most people don’t worry about backing up their information until it’s too late,” said Jim Corkery, an information technology specialist.
