Feb. 24, 2021 – Police have recently caught fraudsters pretending to be investigators and requesting people buy gift cards. The Kings District RCMP sent out a media release on Jan. 29, saying the scammers, possibly originating in Ontario, ask people to buy gift cards at a store to help trace money from other possible fraudsters. After the cards are purchased, the numbers are provided and can be redeemed from anywhere online. The RCMP remind the public they would never ask someone to purchase gift cards to assist in an investigation and to be diligent in protecting their identity and finances.
