The federal government has announced a national framework to combat fraud, including the creation of a new Financial Crimes Agency that will coordinate investigations across Canada.
The Government of Canada has introduced a new National Anti-Fraud Strategy aimed at unifying federal, provincial, and territorial efforts to fight financial crime. The initiative includes the creation of a Financial Crimes Agency of Canada, which will act as a central hub for intelligence, enforcement, and prevention.
Officials say the agency will bring together expertise from existing departments and law enforcement units to improve coordination on large-scale fraud cases, including investment scams, cyber-enabled schemes, and cross-border financial crimes. It will also oversee data-sharing agreements with banks, regulators, and international partners to track illicit money flows more effectively.
The strategy follows years of calls for a more cohesive response to economic crime, which costs Canadians billions of dollars annually. The government said the agency’s initial focus will be on investment and mass-marketing frauds, with expanded powers expected as legislation is introduced in 2026.
