Montreal man charged by Ottawa police for Zipcar auto theft and fraud

Ottawa police in conjunction with Montreal police and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges in relation to a series of thefts in which Zipcar rentals were targeted.

The investigation determined that five vehicles were fraudulently obtained from Zipcar and subsequently stolen between March 2016 and September 2016.

Mohamed M’Chergui, from Montreal, was charged with five counts of obtain by false pretence over $5,000, five counts of possession of proceeds obtained by crime under $5,000, and five counts of possession of proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.

The 25-year-old was also charged with five count of theft of a motor vehicle and five counts of unauthorized use of a credit card.
