Millions of Canadians stuck with bigger tax bills this year, including victims of CERB fraud

March 27, 2021 – Since the announcement of the Canada Emergency Relief Benefit (CERB) at the start of the pandemic, both the eventual tax owed for legit claims and possible fraud has been a concern. Now, in the midst of tax season, we’re seeing troubling instances of CERB fraud affecting Canadian taxpayers.

Last summer, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) reported that it had been the victim of two cyberattacks that compromised thousands of user accounts. Since then, the CRA has been sending out T4A slips to CERB recipients. But some of the people who received notifications that they’d received CERB payments didn’t apply or receive any money.

It now appears that those cyberattacks were done, at least in part, to set up fake CERB applications and change direct deposit information to route the benefits to fraudsters’ accounts without the victims’ knowledge. Financial Post reports. | READ MORE
