Hamilton Man Charged in Babysitter Recruiting Scam Targeting Canadians

A 31-year-old Hamilton man has been charged in connection with a fraudulent babysitting scheme that spanned across Canada. Posing as a caregiver named “Ashley Turnbull,” he allegedly sent victims bad cheques, had them deposit the funds, and then asked for transfers—only for the cheques to bounce, and the money was never returned.

Police say the scheme ran from October 2024 to August 2025. The accused, under the alias “Ashley Turnbull,” secured babysitting jobs and sent victims cheques that they were told to deposit. He then requested the funds be transferred for supplies and materials—only for the recipients to discover later that the cheques were fraudulent and the money was never recovered.

Investigators discovered that the scam affected multiple victims across the country, prompting the involvement of the 32 Division’s Fraud Unit. The individual, identified as Kim Manget of Hamilton, was arrested on August 8 and now faces over 20 charges. These include counts of fraud under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, causing another person to act on a forged document, and laundering proceeds of crime.

Manget is set to appear in court on October 1, 2025, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto. Police are urging anyone with information to reach out either through law enforcement or Crime Stoppers.
