April 3, 2021 – City police are asking Edmontonians to talk to their loved ones about phone and online scams after a local woman was conned out of $245,000.

In a Thursday news release, police said the scammer contacted a woman last December posing as a fraud investigator. He said her bank accounts and social insurance number were compromised and that he would help her fix the problem if she divulged some personal information. Over a three-month period, scammers convinced her to buy Google Play gift cards, create new bank accounts, send wire transfers, and allow someone to impersonate her to her financial advisor about her investments.
