There’s a new text scam going around in Mississauga and Brampton pretending to be from Canada Post.
The phishing scam texts cellphone users with a message claiming to be from “Postes Canada,” claiming that a delivery is “stuck in a warehouse center” – using the American spelling of “center” despite claiming to be from a Canadian organization.
Peel Regional Police have warned residents in the past not to reply to unknown messages and that these texts will often ask for names, birthday, social insurance numbers and even banking or credit card information.
TD warned customers of a similar text scam back in June where cellphone users were receiving messages saying that “Your card is locked” and that you need to “Text HELP to unlock it.”
The banking giant calls these scam attempts “smishing” a portmanteau of SMS and phishing.
Residents should never click suspicious links and should not trust that the sender is who they say they are.
If you have been a victim of a scam, fraud or cybercrime, contact your local police as soon as possible.
If you receive a message you suspect is a scam you should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) and then delete the message.
