Brampton man faces new charges as real estate fraud investigation widens

A Brampton resident is facing additional criminal and civil action after allegedly defrauding dozens of homebuyers out of nearly $570,000 in deposits for pre-construction homes.

Moiz Kunwar, 28, is accused of advertising homes he had no legal authority to sell, collecting significant deposits from victims who believed they were securing new-build properties. In many cases, victims learned they had no legal claim when their scheduled closings did not proceed.

Peel Regional Police have charged Kunwar with multiple counts of fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. The charges stem from incidents between 2021 and 2023.

Civil lawsuits have also been filed against Kunwar, with at least seven suits alleging combined losses of approximately $570,000. Police say that more than 40 alleged victims have now come forward, and investigators believe additional victims may still come forward as the investigation continues.

Authorities are reminding prospective homebuyers to exercise caution when placing deposits on pre-construction properties, to verify that deposits are being held in trust with a licensed brokerage or lawyer, and to confirm the legitimacy of sellers and projects before signing agreements.
