An Alberta RCMP constable and his wife have been charged with fraud and theft over $5,000 following an investigation into alleged financial wrongdoing involving a Piikani Nation-owned development corporation. The officer has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the case.
An RCMP constable in southern Alberta and his wife are facing fraud-related charges following an investigation by the Alberta RCMP Serious Crimes Branch.
Police say Const. Grant Shade, an RCMP member since 2021, and his wife, Katrina Shade, have each been charged with fraud and theft over $5,000. The charges relate to alleged offences against Piikani Resource Development Ltd., an economic development corporation owned by the Piikani Nation.
According to RCMP, the investigation began after police received information alleging fraud involving the corporation. Katrina Shade was employed by Piikani Resource Development at the time of the alleged offences.
In addition to the fraud and theft charges, Grant Shade has also been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He is a member of the Piikani Nation RCMP detachment, located roughly 200 kilometres south of Calgary, and has been suspended with pay.
RCMP have not disclosed details about the nature of the alleged fraud, citing ongoing legal proceedings.
The couple, who are residents of Pincher Creek, Alberta, are scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 18 in Fort Macleod.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
