Fred and Ronali DeBock discovered in October 2024 that $45,000 had been siphoned from their ATB account in a sophisticated cyber theft. The unauthorized transactions went unnoticed for some time, underscoring how cyber criminals are able to exploit even well-protected accounts.
After a drawn-out investigation, ATB reimbursed $18,000 and waived $1,000 in service fees. Although this offered some relief, the majority of the stolen funds were never recovered, leaving the couple financially strained and emotionally shaken.
Legal counsel advised the DeBocks that pursuing further legal action may not be practical or cost-effective. With few options available, they have chosen to speak out publicly to raise awareness and caution others about the vulnerabilities associated with cyber fraud.
